Water Contaminants

For this blog post I wanted to discuss how our water is being contaminated and what can be done to clean it. I visited Safe Drinking Water, National Academy of Sciences to get information. Contaminants are identified by assessing the taste, odor, and visual appearance of water. Most contaminated water requires further testing to find out what is contaminating it. Contaminants are harmful as they cause diseases. If people are unaware of the contaminants in the water they can become easily sick as water is a necessity.

Contaminants can be man made or natural. Man made contaminants include metals such as lead, mercury, and other harmful chemicals. Natural water contaminants include bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Are man made or natural contaminants more harmful?

Contaminated water has to be treated in order for human use to occur. There are many different types of treatment that can be used to purify water. The type of treatment depends on where the water is coming from, the type of contaminant and the cost. Although treatment is circumstantial, I am interested in learning about immediate methods for treating water.
