Each year the hours get pushed earlier and earlier and the time with family and fiends gets shortened. For some, the day after Thanksgiving is for shopping while for others its a day for family. My immediate family has never taken part in the mad rush to the shops on Black Friday. I am grateful for the extra time we have gotten to make ginger bread houses, go cut down our holiday tree, and enjoy all the leftovers from Thanksgiving.

While some are focused on the biggest sales, others are getting back to nature. Here is a list of the top ten stores for Black Friday: 2015 Best Deals.

  1. JCPenney
  2. Kohl’s
  3. Groupon
  4. Belk
  5. Macy’s
  6. Kmart
  7. Panasonic
  8. Fed Meyer
  9. Office Depot
  10. Office Max

This list consists of some very popular brand corporations, but there is one company you will not find on any Black Friday shopping list. #OptOutside is taking over the Pacific Northwest. REI is closed for Black Friday and paying their employees to go outside and enjoy nature.

It only takes one person, one company to say this is enough and we are going to redefine Black Friday. “Inspired by REI,” California will have 49 State Parks open on Black Friday, free of charge.

This campaign supports the employees of REI, families, and Mother Nature. My hope is that this decision to not follow the consumerism crowd will inspire other companies to do the same.
